One of the most exciting elements of the Enrich/IOF partnership was the potential to work together to explore how Maze Orienteering could be incorporated within an ‘Orienteering Event Day’ package, so that schools which do not have a conventional orienteering course could be offered the opportunity to provide a rewarding orienteering experience to children.
The intention was to plan and prepare a ‘Maze Orienteering Event Day’ that would be tested in a small number of schools in academic year 2022/23.
Work began with the visit of Goran Andersson in April 2023 to meet the team at Enrich, introduce Maze Orienteering and discuss how Maze Orienteering could be adapted for a school setting. The team enjoyed the opportunity to meet Goran, share with him some of the work that they do with schools, and try out Maze Orienteering themselves. Following Goran’s visit, the team began preparing a Maze Orienteering Event Day, based on children completing a series of cross-curricular challenges within an orienteering maze created with plastic bases and poles, connected by lengths of plastic chain and incorporating Enrich Education Orienteering Control Markers.
The Maze Orienteering Event Days were a real success and showed the potential for Maze Orienteering to be used within a school setting. Enrich Education will offer more maze event days to schools during 2023/24 and will continue to refine and improve the model so that Maze Orienteering can become an effective strategy to increase the engagement of schools and young people in orienteering.
