National Federations support WOD

This is the third World Orienteering Day and it would be great to see all clubs and local schools in the world supporting and backing World Orienteering Day again this year.  World Orienteering Day aims to help provide an opportunity especially for local clubs and schools to raise the profile of orienteering with others who would not normally know about or consider taking part in the sport.  It is a great way of showcasing what fun orienteering can be within local communities across the world.

Many National Federations are working in different way to promote WOD and to help the organisers (clubs, schools and other organisations) to implement World Orienteering Day 2018. Please read about some examples from Czech Republic, Great Britain and Norway.

Czech Republic

– printing diplomas, stickers and postcards with orienteering theme for participants
– printing brochures Objev OB  (Discover Orienteering) and send it out to clubs and schools

– financial support of CZK 2.000 (80 Euros) for organisers of WOD Events

They have also translated the book “Cool, Awesome and Educational” to Czech’s language. This book will be send out to all clubs I Czech Republic. See some pages (21 of 80) from the book at the picture next to the text as well as in the link below: https://np.netpublicator.com/netpublication/n00695859

Great Britain

In the UK last year it was 89 events taking place throughout the day in cities, parks, forests and in schools which were enjoyed by many participants who took part. We encouraged orienteering clubs, schools and community groups across the UK to put on orienteering activities and events for newcomers to “have a go!” and try the sport of orienteering.

The aim was to get as many people orienteering here in the UK and across the world and help contribute to the “Official International Orienteering Federation Record” for the participation in World Orienteering Day.

2017 was also an important year within the sport of orienteering for us with British Orienteering celebrating its Golden Jubilee, 50 years as a Federation.

British Orienteering’s National Office also got involved on World Orienteering Day last year and plan to do the same this year on Wednesday 23 May 2018.

Last year Natalie Weir, National Participation Manager and Tim Herod, Participation Officer spent the afternoon at Whitworth Park, Darley Dale in Derbyshire running an Xplorer event.

Natalie said: “As it was a school day we weren’t expecting huge numbers, but we wanted to celebrate World Orienteering Day and added 43 to the world record attempt. The rain just about held off and we enjoyed introducing some new families to xploring the park.
After that we stayed on for the local Derwent Valley Orienteering Club’s Matlock club night helping to set out a course for juniors to take part.

Jennie Taylor, Communications Officer at British Orienteering, says: “This year the International Orienteering Federation is running it’s third World Orienteering Day and all schools, all running and orienteering clubs and all countries all over the world are encouraged to participate on the day. Do something different! British Orienteering will be playing their part again this year in contributing to the day. What orienteering events are you getting involved in on Wednesday 23 May 2018?

Norway

In the beginning of February the Norway Orienteering Federation sent out information regarding WOD 2018 to all schools In Norway (10 000 e-mail addresses). See a picture from the website and the link below:

They are also working with national WOD-ambassadors to promote and marketing WOD all over Norway. The federation has a target of 35 000 participants at 200 locations and they really want to be part of something bigger!
