On the 22th of May, the orienteering club, Arctic Orienteering, will host a orienteering event. The event is a middle distance orienteering event on a 1:4000 scale map. It is one of our weekly orienteering offerings during the summer. It will be traditional orienteering courses from White (beginner) to Red (advanced).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the organisers, Regan Arwas, says:<\/p>\n\n\n

– “It is being held at a location called Earthquake Park, which is a site of interesting geological and social history for our area as Anchorage experienced a massive 9.2 earthquake in 1964 and the area that is now Earthquake Park was deeply affected, creating very intricate terrain that includes hundreds of small ponds as well as numerous ridges and valleys.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquake lasted for four minutes and thirty-eight seconds and is still today the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America and the second most powerful earthquake ever recorded in the world sicne modern seismography began in 1900.<\/p>\n\n\n

The club, Arctic Orienteering (https:\/\/olaska.org<\/a>) is a “small but mighty” all-volunteer club that hosts about 20 events during the summer and occasional ski-os in the winter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– “The goal is to engage with our community and to promote the sport of orienteering. To that end, we have run orienteering events for schools, and we consciously make our events accessible to all orienteers. We do have a mix of competitive and recreational orienteers, and we continue to strive to elevate the sport in our area”, says Regan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regan ends with the words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– “The club run training sessions for new orienteers, and we recently transitioned to electronic punching. We hosted a national event in the 1990s, and we are considering hosting another nationally sanctioned event in the future.”<\/p>\n\n\n
